I thought everyone might enjoy this close-up of image #4 from my gallery “Amazing Retro Space Station Designs.” Fantastic cutaway…

This North American Rockwell concept for a12-man space station was developed as part of a program to design and develop a space station to see action by 1975. The cutaway drawing shows crew quarters, command and control areas, a laboratory and a gym. Circular openings at the top and bottom of the station would serve as docking ports for shuttles.

On the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a visitor seeking a doorway into the past will encounter a telltale clue: a pair of gaslights that burn round the clock, framing the entrance to a brownstone. It is one of the few residences in Manhattan where gas burns for illumination.

The promise of those lights pays off once inside, in a cascade of decorative details — densely patterned wallpapers and carpets, carved moldings and flashes of gilt and sunflowers — that tell us we have traveled back 130 years, to the early 1880s.”

Magnificent Obsession

It might make the astronaut wearing it look like a real-life Buzz Lightyear, but a new prototype spacesuit that NASA just finished testing represents the first major overhaul in spacesuit technology since 1998.

From Wired’s Best Scientific Figures of 2012.

Figures contained in scientific reports are a neglected area of the design world. Typically intended for display to academic audiences in the cramped confines of a journal, they tend to be utilitarian and esoteric—yet while looking through hundreds of articles in the course of 2012, certain figures transcended the technical and rose to the level of communication art. They combined visual clarity, information density and insight into some fact of fundamental interest.

Featuring such gems as “Gardening with Fire” and “All the Birds in the World.”

One of dozens and dozens of concepts rendered by designer Saul Bass on the path to creating the iconic poster image for The Shining. Kubrick clearly favored this pointillist approach, which ended up being used in final design.
Hand-written notes are by Stanley Kubrick, and read: “Maze and figures place too much emphasis on maze. I don’t think we should use the maze in ads”.
Many of Saul Bass’s concept sketches can be viewed at the Stanley Kubrick Exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Dazzling James Bond Houses That Define Elegance
Bond girls, hi-tech gadgets, fast cars, evil megalomaniacs and more vodka martinis than you can shake a stick at… but what else is in a Bond movie? The stunning architecture and locations, of course! You’ll be sorry you forgot about these awesome pads. I’ll take the round house from Diamonds Are Forever, thanks.

I’d need a serious wardrobe to go with a house like this, but y’know, I’m willing to rise to the occasion if anyone’s willing to let me live there.

How Wingsuit Flying Works
If you’ve ever dreamt of soaring through the air like a superhero, you’re not alone. Dreams of flying have captivated human imagination since prehistoric times. Even with the advent of aircraft and the increasing availability of air travel, the ancient question stays with us: What if we could simply spread our arms and fly like a bird?
Today, the dream is a reality. Resembling something between a flying squirrel and a snow angel, the wingsuit allows skydivers and BASE jumpers to leap out into the void, spread their arms and soar through the air.
Read on to discover how physics, design and decades of experimentation have allowed wingsuit flyers to own the skies.
